For registration, your name, date of birth, a UK address/postcode, a password, a 4-digit secret number, the number of the SIM-card and the IMEI-number of the handset could be required.

Deactivation:
often, when the card hasn't been used to make or receive chargeable calls for a certain period, it will be deactivated by the network provider. After a free call to Customer Service, the SIM will be instantly reactivated. It could be the case that the SIM will be allocated a new number. In the case of Orange (and maybe others): reactivation will only work if there is credit on the card, otherwise a Top-Up will be required first.

Crediting your account:
Credit cards can be used with a free (from the mobile) call to Customer Service, but allow 72 hours for the initial registration of your card. Facility available on all networks.

Top-Up cards in 2 forms that can be bought in newspaper shops, supermarkets, petrol stations and the network provider's own shops:

- a Scratch Card reveals a number which is then communicated to the network provider via the mobile phone, normally by entering the number on the keypad. Scratch card values vary between £5 and £50. All networks.

- a Swipe Card is initially registered to link it to your phone. When buying credit, you hand it to the shopkeeper who passes the value of the top-up for your account to the network provider by "swiping" the card through a reader. The advantage of the swipe card is that the card is bought once and used thereafter - no more "out of stock" top-up cards - and the crediting of your account has already happened before you've left the shop.
