The Motorola M3588 is a great phone for the light user; it has some good features, but is not over complicated. The phone feels comfortable in the hand and the buttons are large, well laid-out and easy to press and use. There are a couple of extra menu buttons offering quick shortcuts to various aspects of the menu system. Pressing the button with the speaker icon gives instant access to the phone's volume setting, while pressing the up arrow above it brings up a quick menu that implements an easy-to-use iconic interface. This can also be customised to include your most commonly used items. Alternatively you can use the two menu arrows to navigate through the items, an option that offers access to more menu levels than the short-cut button.

The phone has 11 different ring tones and a single message alert. The phone does not have a phonebook memory, so phone numbers are stored on your SIM card. The M3588 is dual band so can be used to roam in most of the world with the exception of the USA and Japan, which do not have GSM networks. The phone also has useful call timers so you can keep a track of your call charges.

The inbuilt EFR technology will deliver crisp transmission of your voice and the sturdy aerial delivers solid reception. In addition to the solid and easy to use keypad, the phone delivers everything you'd expect from a Motorola - a phonebook, SMS, secure pin functions to prevent unauthorised use, fax and data support, as well as calling waiting and call holding so you can take two calls at the same time. Overall, a great little package at a bargain price.
